Unfortunately, these don't correspond to real musical )}notes. 2 is very high, and L is very low (see later for a description of how the letters used in the tune correspon)}d to numbers). The third number/letter is the length of the note. This will range from 1-A, where 1 is a very short)} note, and A is the longest note possible. The 4th number/letter is the gap to be left between this and the next no)}te. This can be from 0 to Z, where 0 is no gap, and Z is a very long gap. Repeats are also possible. If you w)}ant a note/group of notes repeated then put Rxxx as the note data before the note(s). xxx is the number of times to)} repeat. This can be from 1 to 999. LO*k}OK This will list the tune in memory out to the screen. It will only list the actual music data. It will list*l} the notes from left to right, and from top to bottom. On long listings you can use CONTROL and 1 together to start*m} and stop the listing. When it has finished, press return to return to the menu. SAMP This is used t*n}o load new samples into memory. When DMS2 is first loaded, PIANO,OH, and SYNTH4 are in memory. Use this option to l*o}oad new ones. You will first be asked for a sample number. This is a number from 1 to 3. Each number refers to a sa*p}mple in memory. So, if you type 2(and press return),and now type VOICE2(and press return), VOICE2 will load and occupy a*q}rea 2. So, every time samp#2 is used in a tune, it will play as VOICE2. If you changed this to PIANO, every samp#2 *r}would play as a piano. You can set up all 3 samples in this way. Note: saples under 21 sectors long will not fill a*s} whole area, and so some lengths will not work. So, first type a sample number and press return. Then type *t} a sample name and press return. Don't use D: or any extender as these are added for you. The sample should load *u}from disk. Make sure the sample is on the disk in drive 1. You will get an error if it can't be found. After l*v}oading you will get a "loaded" message, and then you can do the same again for another sample number. When you've f*w}inished just press return when asked for the sample number. This will return you to the main menu. UTILS *x} This is a separate section, and selecting this will present you with a new menu. Each of the options are described*y} below: DELETE - this will delete a file from disk. Type a filename (with no D:) and press return. RENAME - t*}his will rename a file on disk. First type the old name (no D:) and press return. Now type the new name (no D:) and *} press return. Don't forget to use the relevant extenders. The file will be renamed. Any errors will be reported, and yo*}u will be returned to the utils menu. FORMAT - this will format a disk in drive 1. This will also erase ever*}ything from the disk. If you wish to do this press Y, or N for no. Pressing Y will format the disk, and then return*} you to the utils menu. Pressing N will just return you to the utils menu. FORMAT/S - this will format your disk *}in single density. DIR - this will give a list of all tunes/samples on the disk in drive 1. Press T for a list o*}f tunes, or S for a list of samples. If the listing goes off the screen, you will be asked to press return to conti*}nue the listing. Also, you will be asked to press return when the listing has finished. You will then be returned t*}o the utils menu. The OPTION key will return you to the main menu at any time. COMP This option*} will take you to the DMS2 compiler (discussed later). This is a separate program and you will have to quit DMS mai*}n. Press Y if this is O.K., or N if it is not. Be sure to have the DMS2 master disk(side 1) in drive 1, before pressing *}Y. Pressing N will return you to the main menu. KEYS This option will take you to the keyboard playe*}r (discussed later). Again, you will have to quit DMS2 main. Press Y or N at the prompt. DRUMS *}This option will take you to the drum player (discussed later). Again, you will have to quit DMS2 main. Press Y or N at*} the prompt. If you wish to quit DMS2 main, and go to BASIC, press the OPTION key while on the main menu.*} You will be given a Y(yes) or N(no) option. - 4 - THE DMS2 TO BASIC *}COMPILER This program will convert your DMS2 music file into a BASIC program. This program is output in LIST *}format, so that it can be merged into your own BASIC program. The compiler can be run by selecting comp. on th*}e main DMS2 menu. When run, you will be asked for the name of the DMS2 file to convert. Type in the filename (with *}no D: or extender) and press return. You will now be asked for three sample names. First, enter the name for samp#1*}, and press return, the name for samp#2, and so on. If you are not using a particular samp# in your tune, then just*} press return on the prompt. The compiler will then show you the information just entered, and will ask you if*} this is correct. Type Y(yes) or N(no) and press return. Typing N will re-start the compiler. Typing Y will start t*}he compilation. Make sure that the disk in drive 1 contains the correct DMS2 file, and is not write protected. Aft*}er compilation, you will be put into BASIC. You can now see the compiled program by typing: ENTER"D:filenam*}e.LST" where filename is the name of your original tune. Of course, you will need to copy the relevant samp*}le files from the master disk to your disk. This can be done using DOS. So from BASIC type DOS and press return. Us*}e option O, and type in the name of the sample (with .SPL extender) and follow the DOS prompts (consult your DOS ma*}nual for full details). Option B will return you to BASIC. - 5 - *} KEYBOARD PLAYER This program allows you to play music by using the keyboard. When run, you will get a tw*}o option menu, similar in style to the DMS2 menu. use the same keys to select an option. One will allow you to load*} new samples in the same way as DMS2 main does. The other will take you into the keyboard player. You will be given*} instructions for using this on the screen. At the prompt, enter the note length (from 1 to 10) and press return. Y*}ou can now use the keys shown to play the sounds. Keys 1 to 3 are used to change the sound being played in. Th*}e return key will return you to the keyboard player menu at any time. Press OPTION when at the menu to quit back to *} DMS2 main. - 6 - DRUM PLAYER This is a separate progra*}m which is the same one used in rev 1.75a. The instructions appear on the screen as the drum samples are loaded. *} - 7 - MAKING REAL MUSIC The DMS2 system only allows one s*}ample to played at once. Of course in real music, many sounds are played together, often with a drum beat in the ba*}ckground. Well, DMS2 has all these things, but is unable to mix them altogeher. But, it is quite easy for you to mi*}x them together yourself. One way to do this is to first record each track onto videotape, and then copy the soundt*}rack onto audio tape. Your video manual should have details on how to do this. It usually involves using some sort of *} lead to connect your video audio output to your tape recorder's input. Now you will need a double deck tape*} recorder and a single deck (or another double) linked together. Simply play two tracks together using the double d*}eck and tape the output. Then use this with another track and tape the output, and so on until all the tracks are o*}n one tape. An audio mixing desk would be much better of course!! You can get sound directly from your compute*}r by using the audio line from the monitor socket. You will need a tape deck with an AUX socket to do this. Unfortu*}nately, I can't go into detail about this method. A good source is PAGE 6 magazine issue 32. This contains details *}on how to do this.
